In this class you are presented with a full survey of the exciting world of 3D printing. In the first section, 3D printing foundations, learn about how the technology started, what processes and materials are available, and how they can be used. Learn about 3D printers you can buy, services you can use, and groups you can join to get in on the 3D printing scene. Gain insight into the current state-of-the-art in industry and at home, then hear about research being conducted that will bring even more amazing new technologies just-around-the-corner.

In the second section, dive right in and get creating 3D designs with some of the many free tools available. You'll learn the differences in how they work, and get expert consultation on what software and techniques to focus on for your area of interest, whether in jewelry, characters, scale models, or product design. After trying and reviewing free tools, premium software will be introduced so you can find software to accommodate you as your skills advance. You will learn the basic workflow used in creating the model and sending it to a printing service to be manufactured. You will learn about the common file formats and model-fixing tools that will help you help you sort out any technical problems with your design. The class includes a collection of models for you to keep and make derivative works from, including templates for Apple accessories and high-quality 3D scanned objects.

Use the most widely known free 3D modeling software, SketchUp and the newest thing: 123D Design, made for consumers specifically to design for print. Please bring your own laptop with the 3D programs preloaded.

About the Teacher

Aaron Trocola is a teacher and industrial designer who has been creating 3D designs and working with technology start-up companies for over 15 years. At 32 years old, he has had more than 20,000 hours of 3D modeling experience in CAD, animation, and visualization. He also has personal experiences with a variety of manufacturing technologies, and have designed, printed, finished and shipped hundreds of 3d-printed products. He helped develop one of the first volumetric display technologies more than a decade ago, and more recently have worked as a product designer, teacher, and as a reverse engineering technician replicating aerospace components. He loves sharing his passion for 3D design with others and helping them get the satisfying feeling that comes with the ability to create whatever they imagine.

Trocola offers product design, 3D scanning, and consulting services through 40westID. He also offers tradeshow/event design, display, sculpture, and other "experience" installations through 40WestFX.

He has recently launched a digital apparel brand called ThreeForm that creates 3D-printed fashion and other wearable products.
